Los Angeles-based Steve Nalepa is a producer, composer, DJ, professor and mad scientist collector revered in avant-garde circles for his studio alchemy and genre bending. He’s produced tracks with such legends as Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders, performed with the LA Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and shared the stage with some of the most revered electronic musicians and video artists in the world. He's energized crowds at festivals internationally including Glade, Decibel, Secret Garden Party and Coachella. Nalepa is one of 100 artists featured in the acclaimed Visionaire 53: Sound, his song "Flatlands" joining original pieces from David Byrne, U2, Danger Mouse, The Beastie Boys and more on five 12” vinyl record picture discs packaged with a portable record player inside a specially produced domed case.
Nalepa is an accomplished and multi-faceted artist. After graduating from Yale with a degree in Economics and Mathematics and a spot on the Academic All-Ivy Football Team, Nalepa moved to Los Angeles where he taught high school math and science, worked in TV and film production, and held a position as paranormal news researcher for national daily news show Strange Universe. As an art book publisher, his company Dilettante Press created three award-winning books, earning Artforum Magazine's "Best of 2000" accolades for Starstruck and the accompanying exhibition at Deitch Projects. As a film composer, he scored Robert Adanto's celebrated feature-length documentaries The Rising Tide and Pearls On The Ocean Floor which have screened in prestigious festivals and museums around the world. As a DJ, he's provided the inspiring soundtrack for a wide range of events, from film premieres to dance parties, from art openings to celebrity charity lunches, from Ivy League reunions to dinner parties for Nobel Prize winners.
Nalepa is considered a key node in the West Coast audiovisual scene, known for his vast and eclectic array of artistic collaborators, cultivated through years of producing multimedia events. Working with M-Audio and Ableton, Nalepa provided VIP support and software training for a multitude of high-profile artists. As a teacher, he's nurtured and mentored a number of today's rising stars while being the behind the scenes support for a number of top DJs and producers. His EPs and triple album Flatlands are available from 1320 Records, the original compositions accompanied by a collection of music videos and remixes by an all-star cast of luminaries. When he’s not in the lab or rocking international dancefloors, Nalepa can be found teaching the Ableton Live online courses that he designed for Dubspot.
